DAWNRAZOR (april 1997), Einar Sjurso
Ľahká Múza has existed since 1984. Why did you start the band? What is your musical background? The primary reason was to give positive tendency and contents to our next existence and to express the state of our existence with something as imaginative as music is. We started up with rather fast and instrumentally complicated music. But in the course of time one will find out that one well-founded note is more significant than a redundant solo. What kind of music inspires you to make your music? Are you inspired by other things as well? No creation could ever start out of the vacuum. The only difference in it is to be inspired or to steal knowingly. But the most suitable thing stays on to gather the inspiration mainly from the actual state of your conciousness. How would you describe your sound? What is it that makes it so special, do you think? The individuality of sound of any band can start up only under two assumptions. Firstly, there is a need of an original statement that doesnˇt travel along with the stylish trends, and then it is supposed to contain, transformed to any form and sometimes hidden for the first sights the spiritual component. In addition, as an example, our present sound is not being influenced by the city any more, like on our previous 2 tapes SCHIZOFÓNIA and NEVINNOSŤ, but the whole inspiration comes out exclusively from the nature. Ľahká Múza used to be 4 people, but now there are only two. When did the first line-up split, and why? Do you think it is better to be just the two of you? The line of four members split up in 1992, shortly before recording CD TIEŇ BOLESTI The reason why was simple. The disagreement of the other members with ongoing art development. As uneligible showed out the economical aspect as well. In our country is the musical equipment very expensive and our partners didn´t want to share with us financially on building up new, unavoidable for our next development, an important technical equipment. Do you concerts suffer from being only 2 (+ the concert bassist)? What are your concerts like in general? Betwen playing concerts in two or in four is no difference at all.Their quality depends rather on the instantaneous comfort of the audience, and of course, of the band. A good concert can turn out well in a small town and on the contrary, many concerts in the city clubs were not to be up to much. Sometimes is quite essential suitable „advertisment“ prior the show but it doesn´t make an everytime impact. How has it been to live in your country from a musician´s viewpoint? And what has become different after Czechoslovakia was divided in to parts? The answer is - nothing much. Playing music such as we do we are not able to earn our living in absolutely no way. That is why we have permanent jobs, what can be in some cases at the other hand quitetying down. For this reason, for instance, we play only single concerts. After dividing Czechoslovakia to parts and maily after the fall of so called „totalitarian“ society, the situation on the „alternative“ scene became even worse. There is no support for the clubs here, the apparatus is rather of low standard so it really demands to hold out and this is why most of bands do exist only for a moment. Our case is really rather an exception regarding to the lenght of our existence. What are your feelings and opinions about your first four releases today? And what can we expect from your next album, coming this year? How will Ľahká Múza develop in the future? The difference between our releases lies mainly in the atmosphere of time intervals of their origins. The significant way in the whole distinction of our recordings reflected also the influence of improving of the instrumental equipments, that make it possible to try up a new processes. The real differencies of the recordings can best judge only the listener on his own, disposing with a distance whitch the creator for known reasons cannot apply. On the next recordings we will try for another transformation, whitch our music shall pass through in certain periods of our development. The future will show out if it is possible to develop our progresses still further, or to change them complletely. What do you do for a living besides the music? What is your life like? As obvious from the previous answers, we do not feed ourselves on the music, we do have our permanent jobs. Actually, basically we live rather simply, out of the conurbation, in the country. Most of the time we spend in the woods and the pure power of nature we try to transfer as well into our music. The cover artwork on your two first Cds is really simple, but also quite special. Is there any deeper meaning behind it? Simplicity always doesnˇt have to mean also primitivity. The real simplicity many times hides stronger power in it than most of the complicated avantgard forms. It depends at the listener only to get into and beyond the threshold of symbols with his own thinking. Then he can find a world so much more varied than the entrance gate. In present time, when most of things is being masked, while in reality they have to offer nothing but a perfect emptiness is the simplicity of a form (including cover and music) really our intention. What visions or emotions do you seek to portray with your music? It is interesting that most of people who have had heard our CD do classify us automatic among electronic bands, while innstruments we use in the way just to replace the play of musicians, although considerably minimalistic and most of our instruments at the concerts are played „live“. We want our music to be rather intergenre though this may result in another problems in possibilities how to come on. The listeners simply tend to „ pure“ bands, whether they are guitar or the electronic ones. But it is important to realize that at the end of a revival to the sixties and that is why one cannot avoid some cooperation with a machine. Important is to control them in a way so it is clear that there is still a man beyond. For example, we use a wealth of vocal effects, many think about it´s just electronic samples, but even on our concerts they are being sung live. With this kind of music we do, it is necessary to trust in what you do. And then, even in at the first sight cold machines, you can find a soul! Are there any other Slovakian or Czech bands your would recommend? Is there a good market for bands like Ľahká Múza there? For the reason that we are actually non commercial band we do not know many people in our line and by any means we do not dare to assign a worth of the other bands since the taste is really rather subjective matter.Worth to mention should certainly be „dark wave“ SKROL or „industry“ EINLEISTUNGZEIT. On behalf of the second part of the questoin only this much : there is no real market here for similiar bands. How do you compose your music? What instruments do you use to make as basics? We use any kind of musical instrument, any song can arise in a different way, one on guitar, another using sampler. It really all depends at the present inspiration, we do not have to lead that eternal musicians fight : acoustic or electronic? Have you ever travelled to other countries? Ever played anywhere else than inyour home country? If you have, what was it like? Was it a good experience? The offers for to play abroad, even behind the ocean, we have had up to the present performing plenty, but because of we do have quite wide instrumental apparatus and basically limited transport possibilities, we have never reflected these mentioned offers. There is also close connection to our jobs. How successful is your music? Do you sell many records? As a consequence of previous answers, market in an area, where ĽAHKÁ MÚZA moves is not very well prepared for similiar music. Both our projects were released in 1 000 copies each. Despite it we are very delighted by the fact that there are labels, who were willing to release such non commercialmusic |
