| Interview for Lacrimate Hecate (Poland) Pawel
vel Moriturus 10/2000
LH: First of all could you tell me where from did you get your nickname Gudrun or is it your real name? Gudrun: It is my real name. To make it clear, I have two names, the first one - German - Hilda - is used more in the "civil" life and the second - old Celtic name - in the artistic and magic part of my life. There is no schizophrenia in it, indeed they supplement each other very well, because they do correspond energetically. But what is really interesting about it is the fact that in my veins runs also the wild Hungarian blood, and so likewise a distant cousin of Attila (the leader of Huns) I can use the name quiet boldly. LH: Your latest released material "Sen Ohraniceneho Zivota" is a combination of different sounds, bands which come into my mind listening to it are Dead Can Dance, Burzum and Summoning. What would you say to this comparison? Do you know or maybe even listen (or like) the two bands (besides DCD)? Gudrun: Of course I know Dead Can Dance. The other two bands - a great mystery to me. Always again and again can surprise me any associations of all who have that need to compare and seemingly find the same thing in wholly different matters. Anyway, only the fact, that into your mind comes a combination of at least three bands shows, that this shall be obviously about something else. And it really is. Without any conceit I guess, what you have heard was an original product á la Ľahká Múza. LH: I know that most of journalists compare you to Dead Can Dance but I guess mainly for your voice. I must say that I see some resemblance, but generally I think that your music is much more in their style. Of course I wouldn't even try to say that you're copying somebody, but where from do you get the ideas for your music? Gudrun: Here it is ! Surely I could be pleased, that you put me into the category of such good singers but besides the fact that I dispose with similar expent I think, that we have nothing else in common. Lisa is a fragile angel, who forgot itself in the 13th century... I live in the third industrial millennium...And on behalf of the similarity in music, I try to get it in a way, that you were thinking about some certain inner energy, about the non-rocking form of the expression and the meditative atmosphere. Otherwise it could seem to me more than curious, that you got those associations while listening to our metallic rhythm and to the juicy, partly even heavy metal guitar riffs. Dead Can Dance would be probably surprised too. And the ideas for our music – they come from the deepest spheres of the Universe of our souls. There lays the source of everything and so of our music too... LH: You wrote me once: " I am female shaman my voice is from deep of this Universe, I am only his holder...It is God´s present." What did you mean by that? How should we interpret it? Do you believe in God? Gudrun: Concerning to the interpretation of my words I think, that I have expressed myself clear enough. Further explaining would only take us away from the point....And on behalf of belief in God.... For sure I was not thinking of any certain Christian or Muslim God. I consider this to be the basic principle - the guiding power of this Universe... which does exist whether we do know about it or do not.... LH: I must say that listening to your album gives me a mystical experiences, did you wanted that? Gudrun: I am really glad that you got this impression. Yes, it is about it... LH: I'm very concerned about the concert matter, how do you cope with that? Don't you have any troubles playing your music aloud? Gudrun: Besides the releasing of our albums inseparatebly belongs to our life the concert playing. For being a performative band it is another part of our music. For those more than ten years of our existence we have played more than a 100 concerts. And we plan to go on in it. When the organizer of a concert ensures some good apparatus on the stage, there are no problems with performing, on the contrary our fans appreciate very much actually our live shows. LH: Have you ever thought about getting new members? Gudrun: At this moment the band besides me consists of 677 and Voda. Surely we would like to take in a drummer, the second guitarist or a keybord player. But since we are not only a music group, we have also another claim on our co-players as only musical...Therefore are the choice and opportunities significantly smaller. We will see what the future holds. LH: Have you had any troubles applying to your music instruments like church organs? Why such an instrument? Gudrun: No, we have no such problems, since at the end of the 20th century it makes no problem to put the whole orchestra into one good sampler. But on the quality of all equipments that we use we pay much attention, because we do our paintings with the sound of organ? For its mystery organ certainly belongs to our most favourite instruments. LH: I know that you have your newest (4th) album called "Cesty svetla plynu temnotou " is out now. Could you tell me something more about it? Gudrun: As for an introduction shall be perhaps enough to say, that it was released by a Polish label Black Flames. LH: Is it a concept album, if so what is he dealing with or what's the concept about? Gudrun: Yes, it is again conceptual album. As results from its title, it describes the miserable way of a searching man...the way to the knowledge...and also the knowledge, to which the man on his way comes to... that the bigger part of your soul you will illuminate, the deeper darkness you may see... but without the darkness there is no light... LH: How would you describe the new material's atmosphere? Is it still so mystical? Gudrun: With the new album we are very satisfied. I think that this album is equally mysterical as the last one. But that is upon you to decide.... LH: Will the new album have a simple yet ingenious cover like the three recent albums? Will it be in one colour? What will it contain? Gudrun: Right, we carry on our line...It all comes about in rich red/black colour. The icon joins two symbols - the last year´s eclipse of the Sun and two lions connected by one head... LH: You said in the Morbid Noizz interview that you use and like single-coloured covers. Are they very important for you? if so which ones and why? Gudrun: The covers in our work always support the main theme of each album. Not only cover in this vein- this is Ľahká Múza. The cover is some sort of a gate to the content of the statement that we try to catch with something so imaginative like music... LH: In the same interview you said that your every album were liked by a different group of people. Who can like your newest album? Is it also an album for the goths? Gudrun: Since we are an experimental band, we do not hold on to the beaten tracks. We always try to push our albums somewhere farther.. Therefore our debut CD "Tieň bolesti" is liked mostly by the industrial audience while the second, "Chvenie absolútna" by the fans of electro, dark wave or of a modern classic. The third CD "Sen ohraničeného života" joined all these camps and brought in the listeners of gothics. The newest shall by our judgement and also for the reactions of the audience on concerts address people that like hard electro dance music...Most of all I think, that it is an album for those who listen with their hearts... LH: Do you still consider yourselves as a gothic group? Gudrun: As results from the previous answer, we are not a band of one style, we are rather above the genres. Surely we shall be glad, when some part of the "gothic" audience will appropriate our work... LH: What do you understand under the word "gothic" connected with music? What do you think makes a band sound or be gothic? Gudrun: I see it all in more deeper relations... And so I consider gothic as a mysterious connection of the secrets of life and death in something so mystical and beautiful like music... LH: Is your art "morally fallen/bad" as your band name is suggesting? Gudrun: The term Ľahká Múza really indicates something primarilly fallen, valueless.... But in the end who can recognize the true values from those, that only appear to be on the first sight? In the spirit of this interpretation I do understand also the message hidden in our music. Seek for the truth exactly there, where you would never look for it... LH:. What are your future plans? Are you going to come to Bolków once again? How do you feel about Bolków? Gudrun: Since we were playing quite a lot this year, and then we were recording our new album and made a video to the track "Sen ohraničeného života" we will mainly take the rest... In the first year of the new millennium we plan again some concerts in Slovak, Czech Republic and in Poland. And on behalf of our impressions on Bolkow? We have only the best feelings...Great organizational team, excellent atmosphere and mainly the hearty reactions from our fans – Certainly, if we were asked to come again, we would like to go and play. But this depends on the organizers. Since "one swallow does not make summer" we believe, that next year we will appear on Polish stages more often. Let´s everybody get surprised by that brings to us the magic year of a Snake. |
