| Interview for Vampiria (Italy) with LAHKA
MUZA
V: Let’s start this interview with an usual question for you I think. What is the meaning of the word LAHKA MÚZA and why did you choose this to represent your project and so your music? LM: In an English translation it means “light muse“ and that perhaps does not evoke anything to you... but in our region are by this denomination named so-called “fallen kinds of art”... and since the bad taste of today is the taste of tomorrow and the truth you have to find there, where you would not look for in any case, seemed just this name very suitable, concerning that, what we have been doing all the years. Our work oscillates on one side between the respected art and on the other – ignored lampoon... V: “Cesty Svetla Plynu Temnotou” (The roads of light flow trough darkenss) presents 10 songs and the emotions I feel listening to them are various and extremely strong and deep and surely the reason of this lives in the sense of poetry they emanate. What did it induce you to create such a kind of amazing Art? And moreover in which way do you like to present to my readers this album and its music? LM: Each our album is always thematically aimed on certain idea. In the name of the album we try to define the space, which we want to search. As with our album “Shadow of Pain“ “Vibration of Absolute“, “The dream of defined life“ also the newest has its own main theme. The implication of this album is knowledge that the bigger part of darkness you enlight, the deeper abyss you can see...and just our music wants to join those who search on dangerous walks through the lands of human soul...and whatever you´ll see, not to forget, that even in the greatest darkness there is a primordium of light... just to find the courage and power to see it... V: Inside your biography I read that it is your fourth album but sincerely it is the first time I listen to a work of yours. So what do you think to summarise here the old releases with a few words for each album? LM:We were starting as a new wave band. In this spirit we released our first album “Schizofonia“ in 1988. At the end of the 80´s we came through remarkable musical movement and from the bushy lighten guitar songs we moved to brutal, minimalistic “guitar“ industrial. This period maps album “Nevinnost“, 1990. It is perhaps our hardest one to be digested by more general listener. And so we became the cult band with everything that belongs to it. In 1992 we released our debut CD “Tien bolesti“, that addressed the fans of industrial music with its crystalic and dark sound. Mechanical rhythmic structures, rich vocal effects and specific metalic sound of guitars became for a long time our identification mark...In 1995 we released another CD, which is unlike the previous one full of arranged and sublime compositions evoking the atmosphere in modern classical music. And so “Chvenie absolutna“, full of samples, chorals and industrial rhythm, addressed also the fans of electronic music. In a need to move forward we released in 1998 CD “Sen ohraniceneho zivota“, which is characteristic with its ritual rhythm, the balance between guitar and sampled sounds and with the new way in approach to singing. The vocal effects definitely left the place in favour of concrete vocal figures. This CD showed us the way, where was Lahka Muza going next. V: Your music seems to be the representation of classical and antique sounds but at the same time it is also the picture of modern feelings thanks to Industrial and electronic elements. Can we consider this union a sort of answer to the different aspects of the life of an individual and in which way do you see it related to your own life? LM: Yes, in the music part we combine the sounds of pipe organ, chorals, strings, piano and on the other side the flaming sound of glassy guitars and metal rhythm. Above all this expands the shamanic chanting and cultivated operatic singing...We really do in our music unite intentionally the images of two worlds... the primal magical “prehistory“ with the cybernetic world of the modern third millennium. And what lies in the music also reflects or own inner perception of our own existence in this time-space. I feel to be a shaman from prehistory and a cybernetic creature of the new age at once... both these halves unite and support each other inside of me. They are in the unity, because they know, that with one wing it is impossible to fly... V: Gothic music is surely the main influence in your music; so my question is: what does it fascinate you about this kind of sonorities and which are the bands that mostly have influenced your way to see music? LM: Perhaps I am about to disappoint you a little, but the main influence on our work does not have music... and definitely not the one that is put by journalists to the section of “gothic rock“. In the passing of time we have found that we have our own way of perceiving gothic and that is different from the established cliché...in the end we do not consider ourselves to be a gothic band, though we are often put there... this can be clear from the description of our work in one of the previous answers... and what regards to bands related to us? It is not that much about the formal part of the matter, we just simply feel the relation with those, who work with similiar energies as we do... To me is personally very close Diamanda Galas, Swans and Death in June. This is to me the real “gothic“. V: Another great aspect of your songs is the fact that these ones seem to be involved by a magic and mystic aura. They resembles a lot to real magic rituals. Can be it correct this consideration of mine and could your music be associated to a real magic ceremony? LM: We are pleased, when our work acts on our listeners exactly this way, because for such action we work towards. The point, in which we are interested in our work is looking for and understanding to the rules of this Universe through revealing of the secrets of own soul...In the sense of the rule – what is above is also downuder... and therefore we are not far from the magic approach. When someone asks me to what I would recommend our music to, I say, that it is the music to the film, that nobody has done yet or to our personal magic rituals... therefore I am glad if you could also feel it like this... V: In “Korene” (“Roots”) you say that we have lost our roots. Why do you think this? And in which way are these ones important to our lives and cultural development? LM: It is some certain feeling of “uprooting“ from the enviroment, that you live in... the impossibility to meet and cross your own life with closely thinking and feeling people... the whole life we live in the necessity to adjust to the time-space in which there is defined our existence... we live on with the substitutions and fragments of our own ideas... but somewhere deep inside of us there lurks inextinguishable desire to fulfill our own nature... V: Is there a particular event of your existence (an episode or a man / woman) that has influenced your attitude towards life and towards music? LM: Sure, in life of everyone there are situations that remarkably affect our heading... and in that mine I regard as the most important knowledge, that even though we love someone from our whole heart, it does not mean, that the person is able this feeling return... and with such understanding usually falls apart all our previous world and deludes us the deep feeling of sorrow... but despite this we must understand, if we want survive, that we are not here for someone or something, although it is very pleasant, but we have to learn to live the life as such... it needs to stimulate a great deal of power in us... and to find between all the ballast, deception and averageness inside of us that, what is able to save us... V: And what about religion? Can we consider a personal religion close to spirituality different from the mass religions? LM: Spirituality has in our life surely its steady place. So it can seem that all our work is strongly inspired by religious belief. In a sense of our approach we accept the basic laws, which are above all concrete religious forms... V: Tell me your opinion about the following arguments: Darkness – important part of the whole Universe, there is no light without
darkness... -Pain – trough the pain we perceive the depth and power of
our Ego...
V: To end this interview, imagine closing your eyes and seeing your music transformed in a painting which kind of images do you see and which kind of colours would be used to paint it? LM: When I listen to our music I feel very intensively the endless blue of the daily horizon and the magic power of the Sun... then it passes to the velvet blackness of the night sky... I see the sparkling Moon, the constellations of Orion and Ursa Maior... and I can feel the closeness with this astonishing mystery... V: That’s, all thanks for your time and good luck with your future projects. Anything left to say? LM: I am glad that there has been an opportunity to share with you and your readers our thoughts and acumens. Again it has been confirmed that it is not important in what language you sing, but what and how you do... and in the very end to all sad and disappointed ones: do not lose your head for an angel, to which throbs in its body the devil... |
